I've used the Sony ECM-ZS90 under similar circumstances with amazingly good results. And yes, either this or an MD recorder will do a MUCH better job than either microcassette or regular compact cassette.A highly directional stereo mic would work even better. It's a lot bigger and clunkier than the MD units, but on the other hand, you won't be messing with media. Connect to your PC and it shows up as a hard drive, and you can move the MP3s onto your main HD, play them in WinAmp, edit them and clean them up with CoolEdit, whatever. And yes, stereo pickup helps intelligibility a lot. $200 or so, plus $50 for their stereo mic. MP3 works well for voice at a leisurely 64 kbits/sec, at which rate even the 10 GB unit would store over 300 HOURS. There are 10GB, 20GB, and 20GB with FM versions. ![]() However, I am able to justify a few hundred dollar purchase if it will help my learning.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thank you.Ĭonsider the Archos MP3 recorders. Cost is being considered since I am a medical student. Any device that allows me to record multiple hours of lectures and play them back through my computer would be considered. I am not determined to get a Sony minidisc player. Likewise, the minidisc recorders can store multiple hours through several discs. ![]() The ability to switch tapes though is very important because of the length of lectures in any one day. I do not think that those are designed for high quality sound capture and are instead designed to be compact and last about an hour to 90 minutes. The micro cassette recorders generally sound terrible. I have tried analog recorders, but so far I have been very disappointed. I was looking at a few devices by Sony such as the MD player/recorders MZ-N1 and MZ-N707 because they both allow me to connect to my computer where I could perhaps clean up the sound in addition to amplifying it. The question: I was thinking of recording lectures with a device so that I could play them back and listen to them a second time to hear them better. Some background information: I have a hearing problem and I am in medical school where we have anywhere from a few hours of lectures to about 8 hours of lectures a day.
